Units Currently Available

Very general unit descriptions are listed below. I would be happy to share unit samples with individual schools, highlighting lesson plans and specific activities. Units are not sold individually, but a school may choose to tailor the program for its current needs, by purchasing units for specific grade levels, or two units per grade rather than three, etc. To review unit samples and pricing, please contact me at whyawayjh@gmail.com

2nd grade

Math Trail

Students follow a math scavenger trail each week. Mathematical concepts vary weekly, and problems demand students utilize reading comprehension, accurate computation, logical reasoning, and persistence.

 

Reading Challenge

Skilled readers examine punctuation signals, context clues, and advanced vocabulary through drama,

poetry, and creative exercises.

 

Natural Disasters

Students expand their geographic and scientific knowledge as they examine natural disasters in terms of predictability,

preparation, survival, and recovery. Students exercise creativity and focus through model-making activities.

 

3rd grade

Prove It! Using the Scientific Method

Students progress from following pre-designed experiments to designing and conducting their own original experiments

according to the scientific method.  Weekly experiments demand focus and problem solving skills.

 

Money and Banking

Students build upon their economic knowledge, from bartering to our current money system. Weekly activities include managing individual checking , debit, and credit card accounts; creating budgets; and calculating interest.

 

Getting Your Message Across

The components of effective communication, the systems and inventions that support it, and the further development of

individual communication skills are the focus of this unit.

 

4th grade

Math Team

Students are assigned to a “team” and each week work together to earn points in individual and team events. Events demand accurate computations, advanced problem solving skills, team strategies, and individual focus.

 

Fight Back! Disease Prevention

Through discussion and experimentation, students study the risk of infectious disease. The protection offered by

individual health habits, the bodies’ defenses, and medical science is then explored.

 

The Legal System

Students examine the purpose of law, the making of law, and the execution of law. The unit culminates with a mock trial

presented to the regular classroom, who acts as a jury – listening, discussing, and rendering a verdict.

 

5th grade

Cartography

Students highlight the influence of landforms and climate on plant/animal/human life as they create weekly thematic maps, illustrating their own original island nations.

 

Shakespeare

A background of Elizabethan history supports students as they expressively read Shakespeare and write sonnets

following his patterns.

 

Own It! Protection of Intellectual Property

Within the framework of a mock class company, students explore the creation of original products, and how to

protect ownership of them through copyrights, trademarks, and patents.
